Eric's Cars (just a beginning - be sure to reload)

My automotive tastes were influenced by my family and friends.

I mentioned my brother Nels (that's him over there) in the Super 7 page, and the role he played in development of my tastes (in cars at least). He taught me how to pop clutches, drift around corners, etc., etc. He also was the one who dragged me to a Can-Am race at Mid-Ohio sometime in the seventies.

I can't remember the year (early 70's), and I will admit I am a bit surprised that I still have the ticket. For those of you that know mid-Ohio, the cars are just coming out of the carousel onto the start/finish straight. Fewer concrete walls back then. And yes, those are the two McLarens on pole.

In high school, none of my friends had cars (neither did I). I drove my father's Mustang, Ben drove his dad's Camaro, and Jeff drove his dad's Studabaker Commander. The Commander was pretty cool - until Jeff gave it a permanent odor as a result of an accident at a drive-in. Jeff later graduated to a VW Beetle.

Ben somehow managed to talk his parents into a motorcycle. For a while, we thought he would become a radical member of society, but he ended up as an attorney instead.

I graduated to the following:

  • 1976 Fiat X1/9
  • 1977 Lotus Esprit (series 1)
  • Honda Civic 1500
  • Saab 900 Turbo
  • 1988 BMW M5
  • Caterham Super 7
  • Land Rover Discovery
